For the Mac apps, they opened at exactly, or roughly, the same speed as before. So, why are MS apps so slow? It's going to really hurt my feelings to have to use it when starting it up is so slow. Can break work flow to click on a file from an email attachment, and then have it take 3000 years to open. Excel 2011 is horrible slow. If I use Office 2003 on a virtual environment running Win7 on my brand new MBP17' it's lot lot faster. Same picture if I use OpenOffice - a sheet with 40.000 line scrolls very well, on Excel 2011 it takes a second per line to scroll through the whole document. I just upgraded my mid-2012 MacBook Air to 10.9. Now whenever I scroll down a page, the effect is very choppy. The scrolling seems to stop and start very quickly. Also, sometimes the left part of the page will scroll down but the right part of the page will stay put for a fraction of a second. The net effect is very flickery and distracting.
There is a registry setting named FlipFlopWheel that does exactly this and can be found after typing regedit in Run and pressing enter which will launch Registry Editor.
