I downloaded the game with a torrent mounted it on Daemon tools but when I try to play it wont let me it says please insert disc 1 but it is already inserted.
15 years before Fortnite and Player Unknown Battleground (PUBG) became popular, gamers were crazy about the Silent Hill series, a survival horror game series created for PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows.
Silent Hill 3 is the third installment of the series and is a sequel to the first Silent Hill video game. Released in May 2003, it on Heather Mason as the main character, the first female lead of the series. It celebrate s its 15th year anniversary this year and is considered an unsung classic in the video game industry.
However, the game is not available online, which means you have to buy the actual CDs or DVD to play Silent Hill 3. The North American version of the game is featured in 5 CDs while the European PC version has one DVD.
Where to Get Silent Hill 3
The game was developed by leading Japanese game development company Konami. Since its release 15 years ago, it has been difficult to find a physical store or online store where you can get the CDs or DVD in new condition. You can buy pre-owned CDs and DVDs of the game through online stores; you can get them from Amazon for as low as $149 or from Ebay for $156.
There are, however, users who have uploaded an unofficial copy of the game to torrent or file sharing sites. The cracked version includes a no-CD patch so users could play the game even without CDs or DVDs.
But since the game was designed for older versions of Windows (Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Vista), players need to install Silent Hill 3 PC Mods to overcome the graphical restrictions commonly encountered by older games.
How to Play Silent Hill 3 on Your PC
Once you have a copy of the game, all you need to do is run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. The minimum requirements of the PC version of the game are:
- OS: Win 98
- Processor: Intel Pentium III 1133MHz / AMD Athlon MP
- Graphics: AMD Radeon 8500 Series 64MB or NVIDIA GeForce 3 Ti 200
- System Memory: 256MB RAM
- Storage: 5GB hard drive space
- DirectX 8 Compatible Graphics Card
If you are using the physical version of the game, make sure that the DVD or CD remains inserted throughout the game, otherwise it won’t work. If you don’t want to use the CD or DVD, you can download and install a no-CD patch which you can find from game download sites.
If you want to improve the game’s speed and resolution, you can install Silent Hill 3 PC Mods. To get the HD textures, you can also install an SH3 Field of Vision (FOV) tool to adjust the display to fit your screen properly, especially if you have a widescreen monitor or TV.
Just download the FOV tool and drop it into your Silent Hill 3 folder. Create a shortcut on your desktop for easy access. Whenever you want to play SH3, open the FOV tool first to adjust your settings, launch the game, then press * to apply the changes to your screen. You might need to adjust the settings a couple of times to get the perfect fit.
Once you’ve configured your FOV tool, the next step is to edit the disp.ini file in the Silent Hill 3 folder to allow textures to render at a higher resolution, such as 1080p.
To do this:
- Go to the Silent Hill folder on your computer.
- Look for the ini file.
- Change size to 1920×1080 or whatever your preferred resolution is.
- Click Save As and overwrite the existing disp.ini file.
After you have edited the disp.ini file, you can then change the game’s rendering resolution to your computer’s highest capacity, which is 4096×4096.
Once all these steps are done, just launch the game and enjoy playing Silent Hill 3.
Silent Hill 3 Problems on PC
Because Silent Hill 3 is an old game made for older machines, it isn’t surprising for some problems to turn up.
Here are some of the common Silent Hill 3 problems on computers and how to fix them:
Inconsistent FPS. When the frame rate keeps dropping and the game doesn’t play smoothly on your machine, the first thing you need to look at is your graphics card. Since the game was created for older graphics card, an incompatibility cannot be avoided altogether. Visit your graphics card settings and manage your 3D settings.
You can also use SH3Proxy with a v-sync toggle. Just copy the sh3proxy.ini and d3d8.dll into the game’s main folder. Open the sh3proxy.ini using Notepad and look for the vsync line. Enable v-sync by changing the value from 1 to 0.
And if you’re using a 1080p resolution, make sure that the following values are followed:
- Fullscreen mode
- Fullscreen = 1
- Horizontal = 1920
- vertical 1080
- Framerate jitter fix = 0
- dofres = 1024
Game crashing. If the game crashes after launch, check the compatibility mode of the game. Right-click on the desktop shortcut and set the compatibility mode to an older version of Windows, such as Windows 2000 or 98. To do this:
- n the game shortcut found on the desktop, then click Go to File Location. You can also go directly to the Program Files folder and locate the launcher named sh3.exe.
- Right-click on the game launcher, then choose Properties.
- Click on the compatibility tab, then tick off Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose your Windows version. You might need to try a different Windows OS to see which version the game is most compatible with.
If this doesn’t help, try optimizing your PC by deleting junk files regularly. These unnecessary files can sometimes interfere with your processes and cause glitches in the middle of the game. Deleting these junk files resolves these issues most of the time not only for SH3, but for other games and apps as well. You can use an app such as Outbyte PC Repair to get rid of all trash on your computer, as well as maximize your RAM for a better gaming experience.
Other issues. If you’re experiencing full screen issues or you want to disable the game’s safe mode, Steam006 has released a cumulative fix for all SH3-related problems. Just download the Silent_Hill_3_PC_Fix.ini and copy all the files to the Silent Hill 3 installation folder. Configure the Silent_Hill_3_PC_Fix.ini file, then launch the game with Silent_Hill_3_PC_Fix.exe instead of the desktop shortcut or original launcher.
Summary
Silent Hill 3 may be old, but nothing beats playing a classic video game like it. Even though the game was designed for older Windows systems and hardware, you can apply the tweaks above to successfully launch the game and enjoy a unique gaming experience.

2. Installing and running the game
3. Run the game with CPU Core Affinity set to 1!
4. Run as Administrator
5. Running the game without a disc drive
6. Playing in Full Screen or Windowed
7. Other Things to Remember

DX: DirectX 8.1
OS: Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows 98
Store: 1,8 GB
Sound: DirectX 8.1 compatible Sound Card
ODD: 8X CD-ROM drive
Installing and running the game
Install using the 3 CDs (there is no DVD version for PC), swapping the discs as the installer prompts. After installation, the game will ask if you want to install Direct X. Unless you're on Windows XP or older, click no, otherwise the install will crash, undo and you will have to start over.
[Hide]Run the game with CPU Core Affinity set to 1!
Silent Hill 2 must be run on a single CPU core otherwise the games' audio loops/glitches and potentially crashes, modern CPUs will have multiple cores which of course did not at the time of release. To solve this, you must start the game, and while the game is booting through the Konami logo, alt tab out, open task manager, click on the 'Processes' tab, click 'Show processes from all users', find and right click 'sh2pc.exe', and set Affinity to 1 Core. This must be done every time you start the game.
If running the game fullscreen, you can have the game automatically start with single core affinity:
1. Copy 'C:WindowsSystem32cmd.exe' into the Silent Hill 2 install folder (example: 'C:Program Files (x86)KonamiSilent Hill 2cmd.exe').
2. Right click on your desktop and select 'New > Shortcut'.
3. Paste 'C:Program Files (x86)KonamiSilent Hill 2cmd.exe' /C start /affinity 1 sh2pc.exe' or wherever you installed the game to.
4. Call it Silent Hill 2 or whatever you wish, it doesn't matter.
Now it will always run with single core affinity without having to alt-tab to Task Manager.
[Hide]Run as Administrator
Silent Hill 2 must be run as Administrator on newer Windows operating systems because save files are written to the Program Files directory otherwise you will be unable to save the game. Alternatively, you can install to a directory outside of Program Files where write actions do not need permission.
[Hide]Running the game without a disc drive
Mounting your discs as ISOs will allow you to install the game, but starting the game once installed will give a prompt that there is no CD inserted. There are two solutions:
Download Silent Hill 2 Pc
1. Use later versions of Alcohol 120%, this software is able hide emulated drives from SecuROM 7 and SafeDisc 4.
2. If running the NTSC Silent Hill 2, the official Konami Patch from Resources (left sidebar) will allow you to mount your Disc 1 ISO with any software and run the game. Will NOT work with European Director's Cut version.
Playing in Full Screen or Windowed
By default the game runs in Fullscreen mode with no ingame options to allow it windowed, therefor either D3DWindower or DXWND is recommended.
Playing the game Fullscreen is fine of course, but if you have multiple monitors and want to play Fullscreen:
(Windows 7 and above) go to Control Panel > Display (view by large/small icons) > Change Display Settings and make the Monitor you want the game to run fullscreen on as 'Display 1'. Note that you wont be able to directly interact with what is on Display 2 outside of global hotkeys (you'll be able to see/use LiveSplit with global hotkeys for example).
[Hide]Other Things to Remember
• Certain audio segments cannot have their volume adjusted in the settings (most notably the Trick or Treat elevator scene and the final hallway before the final boss will always play at a high volume with no ingame way to turn them down), the best way to balance the games' audio is to adjust the 'BGM Volume' and 'SE Volume' in the Options menu to their maximum levels and then adjust Silent Hill 2's overall audio level in the Windows 'Volume Mixer'.

• Saving while entering a door can cause a glitch where random text will appear (for example the passenger door says 'Motorhome' at the beginning of the game), therefor try not to mash the quicksave button while entering different rooms/areas.
• In addition to the above, quicksaving while picking up items or while Yes/No prompts are on the screen can softlock the game which requires you to load a save or quit.
• Freezing may occasionally occur (I've personally had this happen once or twice while quickloading in the Bug Room), unless its doing it frequently, this is simply the game being a so-so port to the PC than a specific issue.
• Using 'No CD' cracks are not recommended incase of other side effects, see above for running the game without the need of using your discs.
Finally, from the rules set for this games' speedrun:
'Third party modifications are not allowed (Widescreen Fix, sh2_proxy etc.)'
Using any of these mods/tools will result in your run being rejected, if you have played Silent Hill 2 using any of these previously, please remove them from your install folder. If you're having problems after having done this, a clean install of the game and deleting the previous 'konamiSilent Hill 2' folder should solve the problem.
If you're still having problems, feel free to make a post in the Silent Hill 2 forum or join the SH discord (link in the left sidebar).
